Today I’d like to talk about, and show you my closet. It’s actually our closet, because in tiny living there’s not a lot of opportunity to have your own space and areas. My husband and I share a closet. If you would have asked me two years ago if I thought I could’ve shared and made all of this work, I would’ve said you were completely crazy!
As part of our master bedroom we have a small built in closet and four built in cubbies. A previous owner added a box that would roll in and out of three of those cubby spots. We’re planning on upgrading that to a box that fully fits that space as opposed to the ones that are in there now.
We are also using vertical hanger extenders. It’s been really nice to add more space to the closet. When I put away the clothes I group them with like shirts and that way everything is really organized.
We stack our pants and shorts on the bottom of the closet. I’m sure there’s something we could purchase for down there, but this works really well for us. I vacuum the carpet at the bottom, so I don’t see a reason to add more clutter.
One of the really nice bonuses to have a small closet is that you actually wear everything you own. If you don’t wear it, you don’t have room for it. It’s just not practical. I used to have a walk-in closet full of t-shirts I always pushed past and dresses I wore that one time and the occasion might come out again. Now I have a practical mix of comfortable and workout clothes plus ways to make my workout clothes look work appropriate on a video call. I also have one pants suit jumper, one short sleeved dress, one tank top short dress and one spaghetti strap over the knees dress. There are real reasons why I need to wear nicer clothes, like when I read Torah at the synagogue. Pre-pandemic it was something I was doing at least once a month.
For off season stuff, I have a tote that fits in our storage compartment underneath. I limit myself to only one tote. Since it’s summer now, it has winter coats in there. Over the winter I put shorts and capris in there.
